You're over-estimating the importance of "prestige". Any corporation who knows their ****, even in another country, will recognise that a qualification from Loughborough is still excellent.

I wish it was like that. I lived in Germany for 14 years and have only heard of Oxford, Cambridge, UCL and Imperial. I never even heard the word Loughborough.

So there are only 4 Universities in the country worth going to? Nonsense. Several of the others, such as Loughborough, are just as good for your area of study even though they lack the fame of the ones you mentioned.
You might not have heard of Loughborough but I would imagine that employers in the field probably have, and even if they hadn't, they could easily find out and see that it's a good Uni to have a degree from.
I understand what you're getting at but I seriously do not believe that it's anything like as important as you think.

Listen, I never said it is only worth going to four universities. I am just telling you the reality of outside UK because I have spent 14 years outside and have only heard about those 4. And I am not intending to stay in this country after my studies. I will be going abroad. And for that it is only worth going to those 4 universities. Otherwise I could have gone to a German university easily. There would be no benefit of coming to the UK for university if I am not going to get into the top 4. This is my point.

If I was intending to stay in the UK, I wouldn't mind at all going to Loughborough, because I know it has quite a big reputation within the country. But unfortunately not outside really.

I'm still awaiting my A Level results and have chosen UCL as my firm (requiring AAA) and Loughborough for insurance (AAB). I'm 110% sure I'll get the grades for Loughborough, but I so want to go to UCL. I'm not completely sure that I'll get the third A. What if I only get AAB?

I so don't want to go Loughborough. What should I do? Hang on another year and try to get another A and apply to UCL (or maybe even 'better' universities)? Or how can I overcome my fear of Loughborough?

I just don't like the university as much as UCL. I have the thing in my mind that if I graduate from UCL, everyone will know about UCL, whereas Loughborough is just slightly famous in UK and hardly anywhere outside UK.

Please help :s

(P.S. My course is Civil Engineering)

As you said yourself Loughborough doesnt have the rep or results that UCL has but that isnt make or break.

Its no disgrace if you dont manage to get in to UCL as many people won't, and besides your A levels grades are amazing.

I'm doing civil engineering as well, my friend (also doing Civil) had his heart set on sheffield and got fobbed off by them (at the application stage, long story)! He was broken but is now going Brunel and even happier than he was about going Sheffield.

All i'm saying is try to be positive about Loughborough, it is a good uni especially for engineering and you may find yourself having the time of your life there.

Plus you have some time to mentally adjust if you do go there.

Remember you haven't got your grades yet so try not to be too negative and good luck.

I know how you feel, I don't really want to go to my insurance...!
But if you really want to go to UCL, I don't think there would be any point in re-taking to change a B to an A because UCL don't really accept re-takes.
Loughborough is a good uni though. It's really up to you; if you don't get the third A, you can ring up UCL and ask them if they'd still accept your application if you defer for a year to re-sit. If they say no, you either go into clearing or go to Loughborough.
Either way all's not lost for you! Fingers crossed that it won't be

And you should learn some flags. Black Red Gold is not a flag of an Asian country. Who says I am an Asian immigrant? I came from Germany and am a German national. So stop talking BS.

I think he was just kidding

Anyway, you're being melodramatic. Only 4 universities? Nonsense. I live in Holland and I've heard about many unis in the UK, such as LSE, KCL, Edinburgh, Warwick, St Andrews, Durham etc.. They all have great reputation, not only in the UK.

Holland is closer to England than Germany though. The thing is when you graduate from UCL Imperial Oxbridge LSE you will be recognised all around the world and everyone will know. Loughborough is a great university if you are going to stay in England or UK. I won't be. That's why I would prefer to go to a university 1 stage higher. As I have mentioned: I could have gone to a university in Germany, but I didn't. If I come to UK for study, I want to go to a top university otherwise I could have just stayed in Germany and gone to a university in Frankfurt Hamburg or Marburg...
muffingg
Are you sure about that? I have never read it anywhere that the university was saying that resit students will not get a place. At least for my course I can't remember reading that.

It depends on the course.

Well, tbh I don't really understand your dilemma...if you don't meet the offer of your firm choice, UCL will probably reject you(sorry:frown:). You have three options: you can study at Loughborough, re-apply next year or just stay in Germany.

I'm not living in Germany man! I'm living in UK and came here in Year 10. My parents came here for a brighter academic future for me. And if I don't get into UCL they'll be disappointed as well.

Well, you don't know your results, so imo it's too early to panic

Loughborough is better for Civil Engineering than UCL though. And it probably will be known in the civil eng. world.

I don't know how reliable this is but according to this league table http://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/single.htm?ipg=8727 Loughborough is higher up than UCL for civil engineering!
Definitely don't go to an insurance you regret putting down on UCAS. After Cambridge - which I thought I wanted, despite being ambivalent because of socialist qualms I had I luckily checked out my then-insurance, York, and decided that was the place for me. I had my list of criteria - quality of education, atmosphere, attitudes of lecturers and the cultural feel of the city - and I found I loved York on all counts, far more than the falsity of Cambridge. I put down Liverpool as my insurance, not knowing much about it. Though it is a good uni, it is nowhere near York and I wouldn't feel comfortable there. Since academic study requires a relaxed mind, I wouldn't force myself to study at a place that didn't appeal to me. If you must, take a gap year, consider your options and re-apply. Plenty of people do it and are, I’m sure, far better for it. You'll have a wealth of knowledge that we all lacked the first time round. I hope all goes well for you.

lufbra's brilliant jus go

Because of my 5 universities only 3 accepted me and they were UCL, Loughborough, and Bath. Bristol and Imperial rejected me. And since Bath and UCL both wanted AAA and Loughborough wanted AAB, an intelligent person would choose UCL and Loughborough or Bath and Loughborough.

fair enough, personally i was more concerned about if i liked the uni and the city or not but grades are an important factor too.

Depends on what table you look at - the Guardian ranking has UCL higher than Loughborough, for example. The tables are largely useless.

Kamran is not a Germanic name, don't you know? If you claim to be from Germany then with a name like Kamran in your profile, you must be Turkish, which is Asia minor and not part of Europe. So that means you are not European but Asian!:yep: So perhaps you should have a different flag!

That is ridiculous! Germany has the largest population of Turkish people after Istanbul, which means you are categorizing a large proportion of Germans as non-German. Your nationality depends on your environment: not your racial origins. If you're going to play that game, all primates originated in Africa so, according to your logic, no one is truly European. It's not your prerogative to tell people which country they belong to. This kind of thinking creates social chasms. I know which party you voted for.

muffingg
Having an Asian name doesn't mean you are Asian. My background is Asian yes. But I am German and full German. German Born, German Grown Up, German Citizen.

Exactly.
