The Student Room Group

Really not enjoying myself...

I am two days into Freshers' week and not enjoying it. Nearly everyone else in my student accommodation is in a flat of 10-12 people but I have been placed in a flat of (what is supposed to have) 7 people - two rooms are in fact vacant so there are only really 5 people. This alone has made it harder to make friends. On top of that, I can honestly say 3 of the people are far too different from myself and don't like to go to the bar/out so I feel like I have to act different around them.

I am really upset that I have been placed in a very unsociable flat as I specifically chose this accommodation due to hearing how social it is. I can see people from other flats in their kitchens out of my window all having fun playing drinking games and whatnot whereas my kitchen is always empty and everybody is always in there rooms. What shall I do, I really am not enjoying myself :frown:

It's still freshers week, so you could possibly go to other flats and just try and be friends with them/join in with them drinking?

How do I go to other flats? Each corridor has a locked door
Which university are you at? Anyways, this is only fresher's week - it's not really an accurate reflection as to how the rest of the year will be. You'll be friends with people from societies, your course, etc. It's not just limited to a flat of five people.

Why don't you initiate a kitchen gathering/drinking game? Probably the other people in your flat are feeling similar...

Go join other people  fresher's week is the only week where it's socially acceptable to talk to anyone and everyone!
If you see someone going into one of the partying blocks, ask if you can come join

Grab a crate of beers, buck up the courage, and knock on the other flats doors- tell them which block or flat you are from and join in. If people, once you settle in (they'll invite you in) ask you where your flatmates are just tell them. It will be something to laugh about.

try knocking on the door. or if you see anyone in the stairwell as your going up or down talk to them
Don't act different around your flatmates just because they don't want to go to the pub. You don't have that in common, it doesn't mean you can't talk to them at all. Talk to them about other things besides drinking, or suggest things that you do things that aren't anything to do with the pub.
Maybe you can strike up a conversation with someone outside of your building and go around to their flat to drink and socialise, seeing as each corridor is locked. Also, as it's only freshers week, you've yet to start your course and meet people that way so don't see this as the end of your university social life.

You could try getting the one person who you do get along with in your flat, and both plucking up the courage and going to another flat. Going with someone else makes it less scary, and I sincerely doubt that the other flats will turn you away, because everyone wants to make friends, and they probably will appreciate the fact that you've put the effort in.

Thank you for all your advice. I am going with somebody else from my flat to knock on the flat next door later on and will see how that goes. I am generally not a shy person but I always feel awkward randomly talking to someone I haven't spoken to before, as I always think they will find it annoying and have seemed to already formed friendship groups.
