Hello and welcome to the Cambridge forum! Before we get started, you should know that when talking about university admissions we normally refer to the year people will start university. So the people who go through the process of applying, interviews, etc in Autumn 2017 are called "2018 applicants".

You probably want to chat with other applicants or offer holders: go introduce yourself in Cambridge Freshers 2018 or in Cambridge Applicants 2019 Entry.

Now you've said hello, want to ask a current (or past) Cambridge student something? You're in the right place!

We have a thread for each Cambridge course and every Cambridge college. There's another page on Choosing a Cambridge College. If you've got questions about individual courses and colleges then those threads are a great place to quickly ask the people who know the answers. They're also a place for you to meet other applicants and current students. Say hi!

We also have a thread for asking Are my grades good enough for Cambridge?. Also pay attention to the Guide to UMS averages when applying to Cambridge.

If your question is more about the practicalities or wonders of Cambridge life (and isn't college or course specific) you might want to try the What do you want to know about Cambridge? thread. Of course you're very welcome to start a new thread about anything Cambridge related. You might also find A Week in the Life: Cambridge edition to be an interesting read.

As well as the forums, TSR has a huge number of wiki resources relating to Cambridge. The Cambridge guide is a good place to start - you'll find links to other information in the header of that page.

Another great resource is the Alternative Prospectus produced by current Cambridge Students: https://www.applytocambridge.com

If you are looking for info on postgrad applications to Cambridge your best port of call is the TSR Postgraduate Forum. And this is the Cambridge specific thread for Postgrad Applicants 2019
https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/sho....php?t=5205742

Also here's a quick FAQ on the main graduate application status messages.

Under Review by the Department means it's moved from GAO to the department and it is somewhere on the Secretary's desk, out with an academic being reviewed, or back into the middle being compared against other applicants for the specific degree programme. This is usually by far the longest stage and can last several months while the admissions staff work out what the general strength of the applicant pool is that year, before making precious offers. This is when interviews happen. This is the point where most applications are rejected ie the hardest to get through.

Under review by the Degree Committee, is the next step (the precise language doesn't matter). This is when a second group compare the quality of applications between all the degree courses at that level, run by the whole Department. So if one Masters programme is felt to be academically very strong one year, and another is weaker, then the weaker course may give up a few places (ie people who passed at the Dept level now get rejected) to the stronger application pool, leading to a few more offers. I've never heard of anyone being interviewed at the degree committee stage, but this is Cambridge, it doesn't do 'process fairness', it does 'individually considered fairness'.

The next step is back to the GAO when they do a final check that all the processes have been completed correctly. It is quite rare to be rejected at the GAO stage.

Thanks to threeportdrift for the above

If you are a student rather than an applicant - we have a thread just for you!
The Cambridge Chat Thread's Starter for Ten - 'No, you lose five points!'

Sorry for that barrage of information. Don't worry if this intro doesn't make too much sense, feel free to ignore me - people managed to find their way around the forum for the nine years before I wrote this! But if you have any questions whatsoever about how things work then never hesitate to ask... or just cross your fingers and hope! Have fun!
