finally, they may be interchangeable but it is still incorrect because 'smelled' is correct according to American English not UK English - so in a sense its still incorrect. 
Ah, but that's only half true
In American English, smelled is the past tense of smell, and to smelt is to do with metalworking.
In Standard English, smelt still has the same meaning, but both can be taken to mean the past tense of to smell.
