Do most men want/need to feel needed?

Everywhere I read and hear every guy says that in a relationship he feels useless if he doesn't feel needed by his woman, its all to do with playing the 'hero' role. Whilst they appreciate a womans independence they don't want their partner to be fiercely independent to the point where she just needs the man for sex, nothing else.

Does this ring true with most men or does it just apply to a certain category? Is it important to you to feel needed or do you find it annoying - or to put it more simply 'needy' - if she needed you?
