When someone says to you 'my thoughts are with you' is that a polite gesture?

What does it mean?
Does it show care/compassion/concern?

Thanks
Don’t be stupid, he probably hates your guts
In my humble opinion, it is a polite gesture.

Some people have Autistic Spectrum Disorder, which make it difficult for them to understand things like this.
it is just a polite phrase to convey sympathy etc.
It’s a bit more compassionate than polite. But a standard thing to say
They are just being polite
