Do you eat with your flat student mates?

so a question to freshers/students living in uni halls and pretty much everyone else lol?

Do you guys actually spend time getting to know eachover by cooking together?

I ask as I will be a fresher next week and I have no idea how I will get to know everyone. I will not really be cooking but just eating out everyday.
I eat my flatmates if they're rabbits.

When I was an university a very long time ago, we shopped collectively and took turns to cook Monday -Thursday nights. I got to eat food I wouldn't otherwise, it saved all those arguments about who'd stolen someone else's milk, optimised fridge space and saved loads of time. 3 of my kids have been through university and they've not heard of anyone who did this.

We were all allowed to state 2 things we wouldn't eat and everyone had to work round that. Other than that if you didn't like it that was your problem. I think I insisted on real butter not margarine and wouldn't eat aubergines. Someone else said tomatoes which was a nightmare but we'd converted him by the first Christmas. Sheer apathy made me eat all sorts of things I didn't think I'd like and I discovered I was wrong.

It will depend entirely on your flatmates, but if you get on with them, its a nice idea to eat together and arrange social things with each other. Basically spend as much time out of your room as possible, and go with them to meet other flats and widen your circle. However, as time goes on your schedules will all change so its a good idea to try and be as confident as possible and talk to people in the communal areas.

Depends, my friend always cooks with them and eats with them pretty much all the time. I normally ate in my room, as did most of my other flatmates.
Definitely, depends on the type of flatmates you have. I recently moved back home from campus. I decided to stay over the summer on campus as I had more exams left so I got to meet a second set of flatmates as my first ones moved out and it was a much better vibe although we didn’t eat together at all. They were a lot more social than my previous ones. I think it’s best to keep that part (cooking together) separate cos I know some people don’t like others to touch their food or have hygiene issues particularly with COVID it’s probably best to not cook together but it is definitely such a nice environment when your flatmates are social and they actually have a conversation with you so don’t be shy to start conversations and socialise more with them cos some people are shy.
I think it really depends on the group of people. Some are happy to live together but separately-others become best pals.
It would be nice at the beginning to suggest having dinner together at least once-whether that’s ordering in pizza or making a pot of chilli and all having a chat. Going forward it will depend on everyone’s feelings about food sharing etc.
Me and my flatmates very rarely cooked together. But we did tend to be cooking/eating at about the same time as eachother, so we had plenty of conversations in the kitchen.
