Sheffield is my firm choice looking forward to going in september however is endcliffe honestly the best accom to apply for? those bright coloured walls are really putting me off lol but i know it’s where most first year students stay. Are ALL the walls that bright or just some of the rooms?
I lived in Endcliffe in my first year and loved it. It has a reputation of being more sociable than Ranmoor but I think they're fairly similar really. The village store in Endcliffe is definitely convenient though. There's also a field, trees and pond in Endcliffe, which I think makes it nicer than city accommodation.

I'm pretty sure that all rooms in Endcliffe have one coloured wall. They're not all the same colour - mine was a dark red/burgundy type colour.

Thank you for your response! I will definitely choose to stay in Endcliffe. Which place (howard, froggatt etc) and block did you stay in? I’m trying to work out which would be the best

Hi @Nicolebarkham,

First of all, congratulations on receiving an offer for Sheffield! This is an amazing achievement  In terms of accommodation, different things are important to different people so I wouldn't say that there's necessarily a "best" accommodation - just what you prefer! You can do a 360 degree tour of all the room types on the accommodation webpages, including the kitchen and social spaces in each location.

If you're looking at en-suite self-catered room options, both Endcliffe and Ranmoor offer an identical standard of room. I lived in Ranmoor Student Village in my first year, and really enjoyed it. The feature wall colours are different in different blocks - mine was a light green colour, so they're not all bright either. Are you looking at applying through the self-selection option?

@Desideri is right about some of the great facilities in Endcliffe, but keep in mind that Ranmoor is (literally) just up the road from Endcliffe. I quite liked this as I could visit my friends living in other blocks really easily. Whilst Ranmoor does have a reputation of being a bit quieter, it doesn't mean people aren't sociable! The buildings are placed a bit closer together in Endcliffe, and there's a lot more flats, which might explain why it's seen as the busier out of the two.

If you have any other questions about living in Sheffield, do let me know!

Thanks for info about the wall colours too, i know it’s not a big deal but it makes me feel better that they aren’t all bright. I have no clue how applying to accommodation works, so i’m sorry that i have ask what’s the self-selection option?

I am definitely interested in staying in Ranmoor so thanks for the info on it!

Hi @Nicolebarkham,

Self-selection is a feature available during the accommodation application process for some locations and room types. With self-selection, you're able to pick you're preferred block, flat, and even bedroom! Even if self-selection is not possible for you, you can still specify your preferred location, room type, and if you want to live in a single-gender or mixed-gender flat.

More information about applying for university accommodation will be made available to you later in the year, so don't worry if you cannot make an application just yet

Hello!
I’m hoping to book accommodation at Sheffield as soon as it’s available through the self-selection option. I know roughly where I want to live, but for the bedroom bit, how do you know which one will be the best (for you)?? Is there a preview of the bedroom/ how I can figure this out?

thank you for your time!

Hi @GraceH-8

Thanks for your question. In terms of choosing a bedroom that's best for you in our student accommodation, I'd recommend having a look at the 360 degree video tours of the bedrooms in Ranmoor and Endcliffe. Here you can view inside the different options including Standard Bedroom, En-suite Bedroom, Deluxe En-suite Bedroom, and other options. I'll put some information about the two most popular options below:

En-suite Bedroom is our most popular choice for students. You will have your own shower room, toilet and washbasin, offering more privacy. You will have a single bed, wardrobe, desk and chair. You’ll share a kitchen with your flatmates giving you a good balance of personal and social space. Individual apartments accommodate between 3-10 residents in single study bedrooms.
Standard room types are a great way to make friends and are cheaper than other en-suite options. Standard rooms come with a single bed, washbasin, wardrobe, desk and chair. You have access to shared bathroom facilities and WC, as well as a full-size kitchen with table and chairs - ideal for coming together and socialising. Standard rooms are ideal for students who are on a budget and prefer living with other University of Sheffield students who share the same education and living experiences.

You may also find the further information about Ranmoor and Endcliffe and the different room types helpful. You may also like to watch our Accommodation tour video of Ranmoor/Endcliffe, hosted by one of our student vloggers, Paula  In terms of choosing the best bedroom for you, I'd recommend taking into account everything you want and/or need in a bedroom, including whether you would like your own bathroom, and also what your weekly/monthly budget is for your accommodation. The prices per week can be viewed alongside the 360 degree video tours linked above.

I hope that helps, but if you have anymore questions, let us know  We look forward to welcoming you to Sheffield soon!

Hello!

Thank you very much for the information and links. Is there a place on the website where I can see what I need (/ don’t need) to bring?
Also, I have firmed Sheffield, will I get an email when booking for accommodation opens? And will this be through MUSE that I book it?
Thank you for the reply!

Hi @GraceH-8,

You can check out the University list of what to bring here, and the full inventory list of what is provided in each room here.
From my own perspective of living in self-catered Sheffield halls (I lived in Ranmoor Village in my 1st year), you won't need to bring a toaster, kettle, or microwave - they'll all be provided! (This might vary slightly if you're not living in Endcliffe/Ranmoor/Allen Court though!). You will need to bring other kitchen equipment (crockery, pans, cutlery, chopping boards etc), as well as bedding, decorations for your room, toiletries, cleaning products etc. Your room will have a full length mirror too so no need to bring one.

Some thing that I found really handy when living in halls: a door stop so you can prop your bedroom door open (makes it handy to have a chat with your flatmates!), plenty of hangers for your wardrobe (I forgot to bring any!), and any decorations from your bedroom at home that will make your room feel cosy and homely - photos in photoframes, plants, some soft cushions - it's up to you! (Most of the beds lift up and have a lot of underbed storage - just in case you bring too much stuff and realise when you get there you can't fit it all in - speaking from personal experience!)

In terms of booking accommodation, yes you will receive notification of when this opens - when I applied this was around May time and was through the MUSE system, but the booking opening date likely varies from year to year so I'd recommend keeping an eye on your emails.

Hope this helps!

Hello!

Thank you so much! I was fairly sure about what was needed but didn’t entirely know about the kitchen side of things.. but the links definitely clear things up!
I will make sure to do so, I’ve seen some advice on TSR about accommodation so it definitely puts my mind at rest, especially with your own personal experience.

You’ve been such a great help, thank you again! Fingers crossed I’ll achieve the grades now!
