how to tell if a guy likes you?

i really like this guy. he is also quite flirty, like when i talk to him he will just stare into my eyes for so long, even if none of us is talking. but i can't tell if he's like this with everyone or just me, and i'm trying to figure it out. i don't see him that often, so it's also not easy.

also i was wondering how i could hint that i like him, but not extremely obvious. some of my exes have commented that when they liked me, it seemed that i didn't like them at all, when in reality i did alot. i just want to seem like i'm "open" and not completely closed off if that makes sense ( i feel like that's how i look ).

i know i can just tell him, but if he doesn't feel the same way it will make things extremely awkward. i want to know in general what signs shows that a guy might like you.
