moderate lifestyle accommodation?

Hi all!

Accepted my offer for Kent and now on to accommodation!

Was wondering if anyone has any experience living in the uni's moderate lifestyle accommodation?

I dont drink, and im very socially anxious so enjoy my own space. The idea of having massive house parties in my accom scares me a bit, however i dont really want to be stuck in a completely quiet house where no one talks.

Any insight would be really appreciated

Hi there

First of all Congratulations on accepting your offer!
Although I have never lived in the moderate living accommodation, i know a few people that have so i'm hoping that I can give you a bit of an insight as to what its like. If you're worried about noise levels or bigger social gatherings then moderate living accommodations is perfect for that. It offers a quieter style of living with likeminded people. This can also be really beneficial around deadline season when you want things to be quieter whilst you work. At the end of the day no matter which accommodation you choose, your flatmates will vary. Naturally you might get on with some people better than others so it really is a roulette when it comes to flatmates. That being said the great thing about Kent is that no matter which accommodation you are in, there are lots of societies and events on campus where you can socialise and meet other people. You are also never really more than a 10 minute walk from most things on campus. I would definitely recommend checking out the list of societies at Kent and seeing if theres something that you are interested in. Societies can be a great way of meeting people with similar interests to you and a good way of developing a new or preexisting hobby. There are also a number of events run by the uni such as the giveitago scheme which I will link below. The aim is to provide a variety of activities for students to try out e.g. craft sessions, pottery, sports, trips off campus etc. So there are still many ways to socialise and meet people whilst living in a moderate lifestyle accommodation.

List of societies - https://kentunion.co.uk/activities
Give it a go - https://kentunion.co.uk/giveitago

Hope this helps!
Please let me know if you have any other Kent or Uni related questions.

Best wishes

Joanna

Hi,

The moderate accommodation blocks are for students who would prefer to live a ‘moderate’ lifestyle in terms of alcohol, music/noise and the way in which they socialise in the accommodation. So essentially, the aim is to group likeminded people together to support this choice of lifestyle. It is also important to note these areas are not more closely monitored than other accommodations, and there is no guarantee it will be a permanently quiet/alcohol-free environment. I don’t personally know anyone who has lived in this accommodation, but can ask the other reps to get back to you as they may know more/know someone who has lived there  in the mean time if you have any specific questions you want answered I’ll try my best to help!!

Best of luck with everything

Hi!

Most are mixed and Kent states ‘we aim to ensure a range of genders and nationalities in every flat’. However, the university does consider special requests, meaning that single-gender accommodation can be provided as long as enough students in one area request this provision in order to fill a flat/house. You can specify any requests in the ‘additional notes’ section of your application. You can also request moderate living/living with friends (as long as you give their full names and student numbers).

Best of luck with everything!

How’s the reputation for keynes college? Or Tyler court B/C? Also for the people that choose moderate lifestyle, are we separated onto a different floor or a different flat block?

Hi @Tud0u_,

I hope you're keeping well.

I've lived in Keynes for 2 years now. First year was moderate living, second was without but with bed & flex. Honestly, both have been essentially the same for me. All my flatmates have been chill, no major messes really. I wouldn't really say either Keynes or Tyler Court have much of a reputation haha. If anything, I guess Turing has the most reputation as it's just a first-year accommodation. All the rest are just quite chill. What really matters though is how your flatmates are, and I think you're more likely to get more considerate ones if you choose moderate living.
As for moderate living, if it is possible, all moderate living people will have their own block, so as to try and create a moderate neighbourhood. But if, say for instance, there aren't enough people to dedicate an entire block to, then you'll be placed with and have moderate-living flatmates on your own floor.

I hope this helps.

Warm regards,

David
