Natural Sciences degree

Hi,
I’m considering applying for natural sciences in clearing after having getting rejections from medicine, and after some consideration decided not to reapply. I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on a natural science degree and the job prospects and if it’s even possible to get a place through clearing, as I have found the course information to seem quite interesting. Thank you for any advice.

If you are holding no offers you can apply now through extra. Some courses now available may have been taken up by clearing so you will have less options then and the decision will be more rushed.

Swansea university medical school offer many courses much more similar to Medicne. Is there anything here that might interest you as they might still be open

Thanks for the advice! I do think however I'm leaning towards natural sciences because of the broader learning as I don't want to corner myself into a specialty this early.

Unlikely as its a prestige, high grade, course at most of the Unis that offer it.
Forget Imperial, UCL, Bath etc but you might find places are available at UEA, Leicester or Loughborough.

Another flexible program to look at :
Cellular & Molecular Medicine at Bristol (lots of different specialisms) - https://bristol.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/2023/cellular-molecular

Would I have more of a chance applying to Bath on UCAS Extra than clearing?

Hi @em_iz

I saw someone suggested taking a look at our Natural Sciences course so I thought I'd link our course page.

If you have any questions about Loughborough feel free to get in touch

Hi there!

I have just graduated from Lancaster University with a Natural Sciences BSc so thought I could give my experience with the degree as it sounds like it could be something that could work well for you! Natural Sciences degrees tend to vary by university, so it's definitely worth having a look around to see what course is right for you. At Lancaster, the degree is very flexible, you can choose 3 pathways out of a possible 21. The subjects range from biology, biochemistry, sports and exercise science, mathematics, engineering, earth sciences, and more, so there are many different possible combinations! The complete list of different pathways is in the brochure which can be found here - https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/natural-sciences/ .

In terms of job prospects, I have a graduate role secured in the field of research and development in nuclear fusion and was also looking into renewable energies and building services too. I think the interdisciplinary aspect of the degree really works in your favour in terms of job prospects, and you are certainly not limited to specific jobs since you tend to have a nice breadth of skills! I also undertook a placement year within the degree which helped with my career prospects and was a great way for me to get industrial experience too.

Some people find it harder to study different subjects in different fields because you have to switch between different ways of working but I actually enjoyed the variety in types of work - for example worksheets in maths, reading in geography, and labs in engineering. I also slowly found the crossover in my subjects, renewable energies and climate change, which was a really smooth process through natural sciences.

I have just asked our admissions team about applying through clearing and they said, "Although we cannot guarantee that the Natural Sciences degree programmes will be available in Clearing, there is a good chance that they will be and that we will be welcoming applications through Clearing."

Best of luck with all of your applications, if you have any further questions, feel free to let me know!

Wow, thank you so much for he in depth explanation about the course. I definitely think it is something I will enjoy and I will read more about the pathways. Thank you so much for asking admissions, so hopefully I can secure a place on results day (if all goes to plan). I hope you enjoy your graduate job role, it sounds really fascinating!

Hi, what is your opinion regarding Warwick Natural Sciences?

Hi there @Uniiiiiiii
A good university is the one best suited to you. A little bit of time spent researching the course (which is the important bit) and the university will pay off.

If you have more specific questions on Warwick uni, feel free to check out the forum at university of warwick
