Official Cranfield University Applicant Thread for 2024

Hi there,

Welcome to the official Cranfield University Applicant Thread for 2024! Here, you have the opportunity to meet and chat with fellow applicants and ask any questions you want regarding applying to Cranfield University.

Below are some icebreaker questions to help you get started:

“What course are you applying for?”
“Will you be attending any Open Days?”
“How are you feeling about starting University?”

Get involved in more conversations by visiting our directory here and join in with the Yr 13 Chat thread here.

Good luck and happy posting!
Hi!

I'm Gemma, a current PhD student at Cranfield.

If you get the chance to attend an Open Day I'd highly recommend coming to see our campus and facilities.

We are quite different to many other universities because we are postgraduate-only. We are strongly established in the areas of business, management, engineering, applied science and technology, and work closely with industrial and other collaboration partners.

Please feel free to ask anything you're curious about and I will do my best to answer! This can be about Cranfield University, the courses, the application process, careers, life in Cranfield, accommodation, or anything you're interested in.

Hi, I'm a current offer holder for Cranfield's MSc Air Transport. Do you where I could find the term dates for 2024/25, such as start of term, end of term etc.

And for accommodation, if I choose to live in a "self-catered" room, does that mean I am not allowed to access canteens such as Mitchell hall, or other catering facilities in the university?

Hi, I'm Gabriela from Mexico.
I want to apply for the Motorsport MSc. Is the English requirement necessary before applying, or can I apply without it?

Hi,

Thanks for your question and apologies for the delayed response.
I will try to find out the term dates for you and get back to you.
If you live in a "self-catered" room you can absolutely buy food from canteens including Mitchell Hall.

Hi Gabriela,

Thanks for your question!
On the website I found it says "At the time of application you must submit evidence demonstrating that you have achieved the English language requirements. This is required when selecting applicants for interview".
So submitting evidence for the English requirement is part of your application.
However, if you have specific circumstances that you would like to discuss about your personal application, feel free to contact the Admissions team on +44 (0)1234758082 or through this link: Enquiry form (cranfield.ac.uk).

I hope this is helpful, and that you are able to progress with your application!

Hi,

Following up on the term dates, here is what I found.
Please note that the schedule is subject to change and that the weeks following a module might also be used for teaching, if necessary.

Hi, is there a website or document where we can find more information on the MSc Air Transport Management, such as module syllabus, mode of assessment/teaching, and any past papers or lecture notes? Thanks!
Hi @Anonymous #1.

The module syllabus is on Cranfield website: https://www.cranfield.ac.uk/courses/taught/air-transport-management. If you scroll down to Modules chapter, you will see the whole Syllabus. The course is taught in the following mode: Taught modules 50%, Group project 10%, Individual research project 40%.
If you go to scopus.com, you can search relevant papers by choosing the keyword and filtering the search by document type (Article, conference paper, note etc.), I am just not sure it will be available to you for free.

Regarding the lecture notes, I am not sure if this is possible to look into notes of previous student, you can contact Cranfield alumni Eva Gerogiu [email protected], to ask her if you would be allowed to look into previous student's notes, she has got the list of the whole community of alumni.

Hope this helped

Hi,

Thanks for your interest! This is not from any publicly available document or website, it's from an internal university document (and again please note that it is subject to change).

If you have specific questions about the course timetable or specific details about modules, please do get in touch using this enquiry form - Enquiry form (cranfield.ac.uk), or by emailing the Course Director, Dr Darren Ellis - [email protected].

I hope this helps! If you have any other questions about life at Cranfield please do ask.

How do students in accomodation (stringfellow hall for eg) receive their mail and packages like Amazon or courier delivery?

Hi, thanks for your question!

There is a reception desk that can receive mail/ packages addressed to you if you live in university halls accommodation, as well as a central university mail store that can receive business or personal mail/ packages. We also have Amazon lockers on campus that you can order to and collect from.

I hope this helps, please ask anything else you want to know!

Hi @EbonyStyx1990.

I have called the admissions regarding your question and they gave me following information:

The mentioned course starts on 30/9/2024 and it ends on 12/9/2025.

If you are an international student, you need to send application before 12/9/2024.

Did this help?

Hi I am already aware of this. I have my place and am looking forward to starting. I am just trying to get information about term dates and dates when modules will run. Someone else got some information for a different course further up the thread

Yeah this is quite bizarre. I've never heard of schools (let alone a university) not revealing their term dates, otherwise how would people know when to travel or even start their jobs, especially those who may need to work part time such as a winter placement? It seems like they are deliberately gatekeeping for whatever reason, or the university genuinely has not decided when it's term dates for the upcoming year are, the latter of which is quite concerning if true

Hi @EbonyStyx1990 ,

Sorry for the delay.

I contacted one of your Programme Directors who explained that it depends on the modules you take. (He is on leave until the 12th August so I'm not able to follow it up with him for now, apologies). I take it what you are looking for is a list of module start and end dates?

Have you already asked your Course Director Dr David Errickson for the information you need? ([email protected]).

I'm contacting another Programme Director at the university and will update you when possible. Thanks for your question.

Hi @EbonyStyx1990,

This is a full year MSc course, with modules running from October to May, with possible additions because you can choose things like the excavation module, and during and afterwards you will be working on your dissertation project.

Once you have your induction and start you will be able to make personal decisions on breaks and travelling home, based on the requirements of your modules and project. There is no exact start date for the dissertation project, as will be explained to you as part of your induction process.

This MSc is a full-time, one-year course, and even if you do not have scheduled contact hours of teaching at a given time, you will need time to work on your assignments, revision, lab-work etc. Your final timetable will be individual to you based on your choices, and this information is available during the Induction week.

I can provide the university closure days for 2024-25:Closure_days_24_25.png

I hope this information is helpful, please do ask any more questions you have. Other good places to look for information once you have access are the intranet and Canvas. The induction week will also be an opportunity to address any remaining questions you might still have.
