Have a look at the following thread re applying to uni in the USA:

In the UK, there isn't a direct path to become a sonographer. Sonographers tend to be experienced radiographers, radiotherapists, nurses or midwives who then take an additional postgraduate qualification in sonography (and it is very competitive). You will need to do your research to see what training is required in the USA and consider the cost.

Its very competitive, although I have known radiographers get on the training course with only 2-3 years experience - but thats with doing lots of extra activities to support their applications.

What are my chances getting on if I apply as a third year midwifery student?

If you're talking about a training post with a hospital, pretty limited. Sonographers don't have their own professional body (yet - its an ongoing issue) so you need to get qualified and registered with your professional body first. Midwifery is one of the main routes into sonography (along with radiography and nursing) so that's not an issue in itself.

So get yourself qualified, registered, get a couple of years experience and seek out opportunities to get involved in sonography - one of the people I know who went into it came in on her Saturdays as a helper in the department i.e. in her own own time and unpaid.

utilizes imaging gear and soundwaves to frame pictures of many pieces of the body, known as ultrasounds. They are prepared to procure and break down these sonographic pictures. These pictures are utilized to help specialists analyze and treat numerous ailments.
