Someone has had a whole eye transplant for the first time, with the optic nerve successfully reconnected. they don't have any vision restoration as of now but it is a huge step towards restoring vision for people who have had severe damage or lost their eyes etc which may well be possible in the future because of this
Think laterally a bit- look at devices or advances that may have made a big different to people's lives even if they are only relatively modest or inexpensive. For example, diabetics might have found their lives a whole lot easier with those relatively simple and inexpensive implantable monitors they manage their diabetes with.
If you want some real cutting edge stuff then things like extra corporeal membrane oxygenation and synthetic blood substitutes are worth investigating.
