University choices

I've been thinking about my uni choices. I'm an international student and I would like to study astrophysics in the UK. I would need to do a foundation year first before starting an undergraduate degree and I need a little help choosing my school choices. I just wanted to know how good these schools are for astrophysics, their overall cost of living, accommodation, student union, night life and all that. My choices are: University of York, University of Exeter, University of Bath and University of Kent

Uni of Bath - good International Foundation course, its a specialist Science and Engineering Uni, and the Astrophysics degrees have a valuable placement option - and Bath is a beautiful historical city - Physics with Astrophysics BSc (Hons) with professional placement or study abroad (bath.ac.uk)

PS, Uni of Kent is currently going through 'money saving' / staff redundancies and closing certain courses - may not be the best Uni to be at in the next few years.

None of these are big cities and none will have the kind of nightlife big cities will. York I suspect will be the most affordable. Exeter, Bath and I suspect Kent will be expensive as all are quite touristy and down south. You will probably find all will have a range of accommodation. For sciences Bath will have the best reputation but there will be very little to choose between it and Exeter and I suspect York as well. All of your choices are small historic cities with campuses outside the city

Hello, it's lovely to hear you're thinking about York astrophysics. I'd agree with other comments that the cost of living does vary a lot between cities so I'd recommend checking our cost of living page and using the calculator to work out your personal budget (everyone's budget is different!). With regard to accommodation and student nightlife, have you used Unibuddy before? It gives you the opportunity to chat with current international students in an informal way so you can find out lots of detail, get some honest answers and culture specific information, it's really helpful. You can also read about our huge range of student societies and accommodation.

On a personal note, I recently attended an event run by astrophysics students and staff and they were fantastic, really enthusiastic and knowledgeable
