My son is looking to apply to NTU. However, he has suffered with ADHD (Attention Deficit Disorder) most of his life and I am concerned he will not cope with the level of distractions open to him at university. What level of support is there to help those with special needs? He is studying Geography, English and Drama at the moment and is not sure what subject he wants to go on and study but I think he would be better if not too heavily lecture led

He should go to an open day and parents often go as well.

Think it may depend. With adhd, don’t you need to be reassessed by a specialist once 18? I know you do if you want to continue taking the medication.

I was diagnosed with adhd and I’m pretty sure I need to go get reassessed since I’m over 18 to officially “have adhd”. I could be wrong.

Have a chat with the support team there about what they can do. I was given some support (not at NTU) including a study helper, powerpoints of lectures and some exam help (separate room, extra time and reader/ scribe. I had/ have a bit of a mix of stuff going on though and every person is different so what your son would get could be different. Best to talk to somebody about his situation specifically. They can also help set it all up before he gets there.

He can also go to open days and look into course content to get a bit of a better idea what he may want to study.

NTU offers a full range of support for all students - have a look at our disability services page on our website to have a look at the sorts of support we offer. As @Kindred posted, have a chat with a member of our support team and they'll be able to advise you on the exact support available to your son, you can find a contact list here.
