Hi,

I have been successful in my application as an NCS team leader. I’ve got some questions that I wasn’t unable to ask during my interview, can anyone help?

1. Do you get breaks throughout the day?
2. Is night duty a thing??
3. Do you share your room with anyone else?
4. Do you take part in all the adventure activities?

I have some more but I’ll ask those in due course.

You do take part in activities, I got my own rooms on both waves I do but u may be asked to share with a fellow mentor, night duty is a thing but it’s only once you have to do it and it’s only till like 12 am . And tbh u don’t really get like proper breaks as ur always keeping an eye out for the young people but you do get to have lunch breaks and stuff with the young people.

I’ve worked in schools where there is no break for the staff between 8-3. The staff have their break at 3-3:30 so they meet the legal requirements. This is cause it’s really difficult to take a break as it’s a specialist school. Is there not an option to have a five minute break during the day? Like at lunch?? I just think it’s extremely draining going without one

My team leader took part in the adventure activities she wanted to but nobody is essentially forced into anything (BTW i was one of the kids - not the leader)

Did you ever see her take a cheeky break during the day? Or did they mention anything about breaks??

ummmm...well we spent a lot of time together and our breaks was usually their breaks as well and we spent it together if we were on our own, but if we were with our whole wave, she would talk and hang out with the other mentor and all the kids would hang out together.

Yeah same I’m down to do two waves. And yeah NCS breaks depend on the staff ur with and if they give u breaks tbh

So do you get breaks during the day? Like away from the kids? Also what’s the salary like for a team leader?

You get lunch breaks u just have to like keep an eye on the youth at most times like it can get draining tbh. Some waves ik the team leaders used to get like 1 hour breaks away from the youth but that’s very lucky. Depends on the wave leader mine on my first wave made me be with the youth 24/7 but wasn’t too bad like I said u get breaks they just want u to always be insight or the youth during ur breaks . And the pay for a leader is now like £1500 and for assistant team leader around 1300£ ( team mentor used to be 17500 )

no its announced on ncs website it will still go ahead, type covid-19 ncs it will come up for your own reference

I’ve asked to be contacted and I ain’t agreeing to the conditions if I’m not guaranteed a break. It’s just too much effort if you get me?

So far it’s going ahead doesn’t mean it won’t be cancelled in the future - it says it’s keeping up with the government guidelines
