Anyone starting this Sep & is nervous?

I’m starting this Sep and I’m so nervous. The tension is just building higher as the time gets closer. I took a gap year so I’m trying to catch up on any missed A Level content and it’s making me worry more

What’s making me more upset is how much my mum keeps crying and how depressed she is about me leaving. It just makes me feel so much more painfully upset.

Anyone else in the same boat and want to chat before uni? Or has anyone else experienced the same thing?

I am incredibly, INCREDIBLY excited to move and get stuck in, but yes, I am also incredibly terrified.

As upset as your mum may be that you're moving away, you can't let that affect you. This is your life that you're taking onwards and upwards to a new level. It may sting for a bit, but you got this.

We're gonna have an awesome time. Try to not let the nerves take over.

I’m really trying to control my emotions! I’ll at least give uni my best shot and see where it goes from there. Thanks for the advice  I assume you’ll be studying Nursing?

Controlling your emotions is difficult if you have no way to do it. Find a way to harness those emotions. If you read at all, read Fear Bubble by Ant Middleton. Its a serious extreme of controlling emotion, but its seriously changed my life in major ways.
I will be studying Adult Nursing, yes! Unbelievably excited

Hi there,

It's great to hear that you're joining us in September, it only feels like yesterday when I started at York!

I remember all of those feelings in the build-up to starting, as it's such a big change in your life, but it's also the start of an exciting new journey!

Is there anything in particular that you are nervous about? I found I was most nervous about meeting everyone, so I found joining things like the freshers group on Facebook really handy. It was nice to get to see some names and faces and build a bit of a picture of what things would be like. I even started up some conversations with people on my course and in my halls, which made me look forward to uni a lot more and ease my nerves about settling in.
Here is the Official University of York Freshers 2021/22 group if you're interested!

The pandemic has also made things a bit trickier this year, and I imagine it's hard to visualize what student life will be like because you might not have been able to visit campus. We've launched our Visit UoY App that lets you take a guided tour of our campus, which is really useful to start to get to know where you'll be living and studying!

You can also find our latest Covid-19 guidance here, which is regularly updated.

I hope this has helped a bit, and feel free to ask any questions about life at York- best of luck for September!

Try not to let your mum's emotions get the better of you - obviously starting uni and moving away from home is a sign that you're moving onwards and upwards in life, and yes, it can be difficult at first. Definitely try to keep in touch with your family and friends from home when you can once you're at uni.

I still remember the nerves I felt initially when I first started at York two years ago - I only found a couple of people living in my accommodation via Facebook groups, etc., but I met most of them in person for the first time. Just remember to be yourself and get to know people by chatting to your flatmates/those who live in your block, your coursemates, and joining various societies and sports clubs. Also met those who are in your college and get to know the college team.

Btw, what course will you be starting this September and what college will you be in? I'm going into my third year of Social and Political Sciences (SPS) and I'll be in Goodricke College (I used to be in Vanbrugh College).

Nice!

I don't know a lot about Goodricke actually, but it's not unfamiliar territory to me as I had friends in years above me who lived there last year and they've loved it. The college nucleus houses the laundrette itself so you'll never have to walk far from your block to do the laundry. It also houses the college team, JCR, a well-being room, and the Clabour Room which is basically another room for college staff, students, etc. to hang out/chill.

As for SPS, it's a fantastic course and I'm enjoying it so far. In Year 1, you'll take 4 core modules, including Contemporary Issues in Social and Political Science which introduces you to interdisciplinary teaching in the Social Sciences and you'll be exploring contemporary issues such as Black Lives Matter, Climate Change/Emergency, etc. (the topics may vary year on year). In Years 2 and 3, you'll take one core module (Social Research Methods and Dissertation respectively) followed by option modules (3 in Year 2 and 4 in Year 3, 2 per term) and the latter will allow you to specialise in a particular field.

You may have also heard that from September, SPS will be joining Social Policy and Social Work (SPSW) and the York Management School is moving to the new Church Lane Building which is between Campus West and Campus East. I'm personally excited for the move because based on the architectural renderings of the building inside, it looks really lush and will be a massive improvement from the old building - there's a cafe, various study spaces, etc.

where are you moving from?
The only thing I am nervous about is not making good friends and being left out of things, being by myself in lessons and lectures, sitting on my own. Being lonely tbh that's it. I've experienced it before and i I had to drop out of college.

Same, except I dropped out of uni and am retaking first year elsewhere

Nothing more depressing seeing other people in your class laughing and chatting with each other and you're just there by yourself. And getting into groups and partners when you have no one. I really hope it changes for us this year. I don't think I could experience that loneliness again.
