Has anyone had panic attacks after being hurt romantically?

I had a major panic attack the morning after I was told something horrible about the girl I loved. I had a history of course, this wasn't my first PA.

But why have a panic attack over it? it's not like it was something that threatened my life?
I had plenty of them after my first break. I'd say it's normal, especially if you've had them before / have anxiety.

Ever since I watched someone I love fall in love with another person in front of my eyes I've suffered with perpetual sadness, low self esteem, lack of energy, lack of appetite, sleepiness and crippling anxiety when leaving the house and being around people.

Not so much a panic attack, more so that heart sinking feeling you get when you trip up.

But that sounds a normal reaction minus the crippling anxiety part.

Why would having your heart broken cause anxiety? that's essentially what happened to me too. I don't understand it. I had my first panic attack when I thought I was gonna die from a drug I took. I understood why I panicked then ofc. I don't understand it now...

Not the same situation as you and the person you quoted, but I once had a massive panic attack related to something that happened with my boyfriend.

I have abandonment issues, so I think the reason behind the panic attack was because the situation was linked to something that causes anxiety within me. I don't know whether that could be the case with you?

This person essentially bought me out of all that. My mental health improved significantly because of him. My weight improved and he helped me to socialise again. As a result I because emotionally dependent on him. So when he moved on it hit me hard.

To answer your question, heart break can cause anxiety for a number of reasons (rummnation and self judgement). You feel not good enough and you judge yourself harshly for the way things turn out.

I see. I have no self-esteem and I do feel extremely inadequate. She did make me feel less useless and when I thought I lost her, I panicked. I suppose that alone is enough...

Thx for the clarity.

I am also beginning to think whether being stressed in general (other things unrelated to relationships) has a sort of cumulative effect on your body.

Yes, I have had multiple panic attacks after my last break up, and my anxiety has gone through the roof. Not quite sure why it happens.

I mean actual panic attacks btw, not what people casually call panic attacks. I mean, blurred vision, hyperventilation, that feeling that Dementors are draining u of pleasant memories, etc.

I've suffered with anxiety and depression since my teenage years. I also struggled with anorexia and social isolation (spent months not leaving the house) throughout the last few years.

This person essentially bought me out of all that. My mental health improved significantly because of him. My weight improved and he helped me to socialise again. As a result I because emotionally dependent on him. So when he moved on it hit me hard.

I am relapsing so bad.

Also the brain chemicals that cause you to fall in love also cause depression and anxiety.
I'd say that oxytocin and seratonin are different chemicals.

I think they interact with eachother. Oxytocin, serotonin, dopamine and endorphin. The happy/ love chemicals.

There was a TED talk that explained that SSRI's inhibit your ability to fall in love.

Wow,most people only think of serotonin as the happy chemical. You listed all four of them and also pretty much indirectly explained the problem with we have SSRIs.That other neurotransmitters are involved, and scientists are trying to base treatments based on the others.
You even listed all four !You are on point .
Anyway,OP go and and seek professional help if it is bothering you.
The people on here may be helpful but don't substitute for medical help.

Panic attacks don't always have a reason

I had one after waking up one morning. Just came on out of the blue for no reason at all. I had even had a pleasant sleep and wasn't going anywhere that day.

I've a psychiatrist but you know, listening to other people's experiences is therapeutic in a way that a cold, professional look at it isn't.

Out of interest, why did you call your psychiatrist cold ?
It is a bit harsh labeling someone who is trying to help you as cold.
