Part-time second degree in Biology or Microbiology

Hello,

I have applied to study a part-time degree in either Biology or Microbiology, to start Sept 2018. All the courses I have applied to have a 50% course intensity. The course codes are: CC57, C100, C101 and C501. They are not distance learning courses (I have applied to Southampton, Leeds, Nottingham, Manchester Met and UEA).

I already have a Master's degree in social science, but I want to retrain.

Would I be able to get a tuition fee and maintenance loan please?

I am British, have been living in the UK for over 3 years, and my household income is less than £25,000 per year.

It says here that tuition fee loans will be available to part-time ELQ students studying Biological Science subjects from Sept 2017:

https://www.parliament.uk/business/publications/written-questions-answers-statements/written-statement/Commons/2016-07-21/HCWS117/

And here is says that part-time maintenance loans for the above courses will be available for ELQ students from Sept 2018:

Can you please confirm that this is correct?

Thank you!

Hi Bmerry8,

You are correct, Part-time STEM courses are going to be exceptions the ELQ rule. With regards to exactly which courses will definitely be eligible, it is course specific. At present, we don't actually have the list of courses which will be eligible, however, if you contact the universities, they should be able to tell you if the courses you're interested will be able to be funded.

To offer another option that may be useful, courses are usually given 'JACS codes', this is different than the UCAS codes you've mentioned. If you're able to ask the universities if they can provide you with 'JACS' codes for the courses and if the JACS codes begin with either H,I,J,B,C,D,F,G this means the course should be eligible.

I hope this information is useful.

Kind regards,

John.

Hi Bmerry8,I'm considering taking this path too. I'm weighing up my options and was wondering if you could tell me a bit about your story and maybe some useful resources you found. I studied German at UCL at undergrad and I was considering the GDL but I didn't enjoy legal work experience too much and I love nature and science so I'm considering a career in molecular biology or something environmental.Rish
