How do you apply for clearing?

You don't apply *for* clearing; if you fail to meet your offer on Results Day, you automatically get placed in clearing. You then use the website to find courses which still have places, and ring up the clearing hotlines of different universities.

I can tell you how it went for me. I failed to meet my firm and didn't want to go to my insurance, so I phoned them up and asked them to release me into clearing. I'd read online (on here) that you shouldn't apply without requesting the universities permission. So I called the first uni I was interested in and after answering a couple quick questions about my qualifications and residence over the phone they emailed me instructions to apply via UCAS. I followed the instructions they gave me and a week later it was showing on UCAS that I'd been accepted.
