Transfer to Medicine from Biomedicine at Plymouth University

Hello,
I have an offer to study Biomedicine at Uni of Plymouth. I was my 5th choice in my medicine application. I am wondering how likely and competitive the transfer into medicine scheme is for Year 1 Biomed students and if it’s a risky move for someone who wouldn’t want to do graduate entry medicine if it doesn’t work out.

If you’re set on medicine, take a gap year and reapply. No point going to uni for a degree you don’t want to do. Take a gap year, get some more experience, reflect on why you didn’t get into med and reapply.

yep, I would go for it if only I knew what the competition was like and whether it’s guaranteed that there are enough places for transfer into medicine anyway. i’m not sure :/ I dont wanna get to the point where I wanna apply and find out I cant because there isn’t any funded spaces or the requirements have changed

100%. its definitely a risk to do post grad medicine entry since usually u need a 2:1 or top scores at uni. Considering its 9k + a year I wanna do something I dont mind continuing to as a career and optometry is not really for me. Retaking a levels, gaining experience and reapplying to medicine is cheaper and gives u a stronger application but im already behind my peers. dont rlly want to take yet another year ://

i’m in the same position!! I think it would be better to take a gap year. everything with applying to medicine is just so uncertain lol. but in the long run it won’t matter that we’re behind a year or two.

im with u on that. I rlly dont want to give up on my long term goal here and I think Ill benefit a lot from taking another year and redoing ucat and bmat and gaining more experience. I just dont know how im gonna break to it to the parents. also did u see my pm by any chance?

hi there i am in the same situation as u and i was also wondering the same thing but however its really risky as the spaces are very low and u have have a good percentage in the first year of biomed in order to transfer so theres not even a 50% chance to take that risk

"The following criteria are applied for stage one transfer applicants:

Applicants must achieve AAB at A level to include A in Biology and A in a second science from Chemistry, Physics, Maths or Psychology
A minimum of 70% average across all Year 1 degree modules
An interview process is required
UCAT is not required
This is a competitive route into our medical degree and is not guaranteed to any candidate. We are able to interview 20 candidates between medicine and dentistry and offer places to a total of 10 individuals across the programmes."

This is what it states on their website.
