NI number when living abroad

Hi, my daughter is a British national and we live in France. She has been granted home fee status, tuition fee and the minimum maintenance loan by Student Finance England.

However, to be paid the maintenance loan, she needs a National Insurance number, which she obviously didn't get automatically at 16 since we live abroad and we have never claimed child benefit.

She is being asked to fill in a form giving a UK address to get her NI number. We have a lot of immediate family in England, should she give that address or wait until she is at uni, then ask for her NI number? Very confusing...

TIA

Hi Tia,

To qualify as a home student, the student need to be residing in the UK on the first day of the first academic year of the course as well as 3 years residency in the UK. We need that UK address, rather than the EU address so that we can automatically request an appointment with the DWP for the student to obtain the National Insurance Number.

Thanks, Clare
