Selective memory

idk why but i can remember hundreds of random facts about animals, about space, about celebrities but i struggle way more with remembering school work? I don't understand why this is, i can hear a fact about a jellyfish(for example) and i'll remember it for ages with no consistent revision or memorizing but this isnt the case with like maths equations. To put it simply, if there was an alevel about random facts - i would get an A.
Why does this happen and how can i fix this for things i actually need to remember?
Perhaps the things you're unexpectedly memorising are content you're interested in - or maybe something that stands out to you.
Compared to school-work, you may not find any of the content there as exciting or as spontaneous as these random facts.
