How to meet new people?

There are a lot of posts on here regarding this topic but everyone is different so I want some guidance specific to me.

So I am a second year university student commuting from home and I currently have no job (I am trying!), the problem I have is that I am a loner :ashamed2: who has little to none close friends, I get along with people but don't have a friend circle. This wasn't a problem before but now I feel really down about it, I really want to make more friends and meet new people, and even find a girlfriend. Before getting a gf I need to sort myself out and become more sociable (no woman wants to go out with a loner :s-smilie:).

So how can I meet new people and make more friends and even meet more women? Like I said I commute from home so societies are going to be a bit tough to commit to, I don't go out to bars (got no one to go with), please give me some guidance people!

If it helps I am a bit shy but I am trying to 'break out of my shell', I want to be an alpha male lol. Please share your experiences especially if your people who were once in my position...

How long is your commute? Look around different societies, some social meetings can be at the weekend too or in the early evening, giving you time to make it home before it's too late. Make friends on your course too, surely you can talk to people in your class?

Also don't use the term 'alpha male'. Thanks.

Haha the alpha male thing is motivation to become more confident (gym motivation mainly)

My commute is long, about two hours. :s-smilie: As for people on my course, everyone seems to have their own circle. I join in to conversations during practicals but they're usually about studies.

Is it too late to join societies? I mean freshers is gone. Also I have no idea on what to do regarding societies like which ones should I join...
Why dont you do some volunteering, maybe with the homeless or food banks. Take up sports. Getting a job will really help, so keep trying with that. Just go into your uni library and start a conversation. Honestly, as a girl, its refreshing for a guy just to start talking to us in person, rather than other the internet. Or maybe ask someone for help with your work, thats a good excuse.

I know it can feel crappy having no friends and i am sure you do have atleast one. But just get yourself out there.
Good luck !!!!

Thanks for the advice, the library bit seems to lift my hopes, I spend a lot of time in the uni library.... Though I would like a girlfriend, that isn't my priority, the way I see things is that once I become more socially confident/outgoing it'll happen. I just find it soo difficult to socialise-sometimes I feel like I might actually have a mental health disorder :s-smilie: I find it amazing how some people are naturally so social.

And it isn't that I am lazy, I am interested in taking up volunteering/societies but have no idea where to start. I am not into sports that much tbh, I do go gym and have a better figure than most guys, though my confidence is still weak af.
