From Biomedical Science to Sonographer

Anyone help me out?

I just wanna know if its possible to go into the route of becoming a medical sonographer

considering the fact that i have a degree in biomedical science how would i go about doing this? like what are my options? i know i havent done a radiography degree but I just wanna know what routes there are that i could take?
The only routes are to do a radiography degree or a midwifery degree and then specialise into Ultrasound as there currently isn’t any direct entry route into it

Don't you just have to do a post graduate diploma from a science based background?
There are masters courses available to specialise in ultrasound. You would need a postgraduate qualification in order to practise as an sonographer, and whichever course you choose would need to be accredited by CASE (Consortium for the Accreditation of Sonographic Education) so I recommend you start by researching the available postgraduate courses 😊👍

In regards to working within the NHS do you need a degree that is registered by the HCSP beforehand?

Hi there! No you don't need an HCPC degree to work as a sonographer as it is not a registered title. If you were to work as a radiographer who also practised ultrasound, you would need to be registered with the HCPC. But as a clinical or diagnostic sonographer you don't need this registration. You actually don't officially need any qualification to be a sonographer, but you would be very unlikely to get any job working in ultrasound without one. The British Medical Ultrasound Society have lots of info on their website about training as a sonographer, so I recommend researching the role on their website 🙂👍
