How do unis such as King's that don't do clearing fill their spaces?

I was wondering how unis, particularly King's, is able to fill their spaces when they don't do clearing. Only so many people make firm choices on whatever universities and same with insurance. How do they get filled
Unis make more offers to people than there are seats - this is because they are aware that not everyone will meet their offer or firm them. They have a set number of applicants they make offers to every year, and this number is based on the trends of the previous batches. Additionally, since so many people apply to unis like KCL, they are very oversubscribed to begin with, so they rarely go into Clearing. You might find a less popular course on there sometimes though.

Top Unis will prefer to use 'near-miss' offer holders to fill any spaces than put courses into Clearing.

Its all about reputation and making it look like they didn't need to rely on something as inferior as Clearing to fill their courses.
Just a numbers game. If they’ve got a 100 seat course and get 2000 apps, they make 250 offers and they’re pretty much guaranteed to be full on results day just from people meeting conditions. If not, then as above they will have plenty of credible near misses who want to attend.
