Switching from 3-Year to 4-Year 'with placement year' course

Many degree courses which have a "with placement year" version allow the student to switch between the standard 3-year course and the 4-year "with placement year" version during the course, typically at the beginning of year 2.

I am aware that both tuition fees loans and maintenance loans are provided for the "normal" duration of the course, plus 1 "gift" year (to allow for a possible repeat year, for example).

Would a student who switches from a 3-year to a 4-year "with placement year" version of the same course be using their "gift" year by doing so? Or does this kind of change not impact the "gift" year?

Hi there,

If your university sends us a 'change of circumstance' for your previous years changing this from a 3 year course to a 4 year course then it should rectify your course without this classing as the 'gift year' as this would then be part of your actual course. Which should allow you to have the additional year still if you've not used this yet. Thanks, Jason
