Independent Student Query

If someone is under 25 and has been working full time for more than 36 months, but is living with parents and making a ‘contribution to the household’ rather than paying full market rate and individual council tax/utility bills, will they still be considered as an Independent Student?
Hi there,

If you have evidence that you have been self sufficient for 3 years prior to the 1st day of the 1st academic year of your course then you can apply as an Independent Student.

Hi Drew - thanks for your reply. The person in question has been working full time for over three years, so has payslips/P60s etc to prove income. The main query is whether he would still be considered independent if he’s been living at the parental home all that time. He has paid a regular contribution to the home (albeit below market rent rate), which could be evidenced by bank statements, but has not paid his own utility bills/council tax etc separately. Would this be ok to apply as an independent student? Thank you.
Hi there,

Yes then can still be classed as an Independent Student even if they have been living at the Parental Home as the evidence we request is in regards to their employment. So as long as they have been working to an acceptable level to show they have been able to support themselves they can be approved as an Independent Student.

Thanks, Drew
