Laptop for my daughter

Hi, can someone please advise me on the best laptop to purchase for my 11 year old. She has just started secondary school, and says it will help her with homework. She says she needs one with PowerPoint? She also does the normal socialising via her phone etc, so I don't no if she needs a certain memory? I am totally clueless when it comes to computers. She has been a digital leader for the last 3 years, and wants to be a graphic designer, she defiantly knows her way around a computer, she is suggesting an iMac but that is totally not happening at her age or on my budget! Any help please

She's only 11, so she wouldn't be doing anything advanced so i would suggest a basic laptop with Microsoft office.
Office application can run on almost every computer at the moment.

What kind of budget do you have and what kind of school work is she actually going to be doing?

For the graphic stuff it's probably cheaper to sign her up to a class or something. Buying professional hardware and software for an 11 year old seems a little extreme.

Hi, I was looking at a maximum of £300. She does a lot of homework using power points, I also need to get a printer for this laptop, most of her presentation style homework she uses this PowerPoint?

No need to spend a lot.
Is she going to carry t round a lot?
If she has suggested an imac then that is a desktop.
Make sure she is sure she definitely wnats a laptop rather than desktop. You will get more for your money with a desktop at the expense of portability.
Would you consider second hand?

Alternative Black friday is almost upon us and there should be a fair few deals. £300 is still modest. but yopu can get a PC to do what you want .

Really recommend a chromebook, doesnt normally use Windows but uses a google Chrome operating system instead, but you can definitely get Microsoft Office (power point) on them very easily. You can get some really good ones for about 250 pounds and theyre perfect for what youre after.

Again like the others have said I doubt she'll need that much at 11 and it's definitely achievable with £300. As a minimum I'd go for: 2GHz processor, 2GB RAM, 12" display and 300GB memory/HDD with anything above being a bonus. I've been using a MacBook Pro since 2012 and it's: 2.5GHz, 4GB RAM, 13" display and 500GB HDD, and it's been fine for the bulk of my schoolwork (in year 13 now) but honestly I'd keep your distance from apple (Dad bought this for me) mainly because it's not really worth the cost and compatibility can be an issue sometimes.

Thank you, no she definitely wants a laptop, I'm holding out for Black Friday in the hope I can get a better deal, just wanted an idea of what I wanted before I went into into pc world and got hussled into buying sonething i don't need lol
A Mac is way over the top obviously.

A chromebook wouldnt be good for any graphic design work - they are good for browsing the internet basically e.g. email, social networking but not graphic design and its difficult to print from those.

Wow, i didn't even have a laptop when i was 11. i had a cheap desktop computer with microsoft 2007. literally. Buy her a refurbished laptop- Toshiba satellite C50 is a good one cheap. I brought it for my little brother when he was in year 6 for £150.00 so it was decent price  it still works and hes using it right now.
You dont want to spend too much, because she is still young and accidents happen.

Thank you, my niece also has a toshiba c50, for some reason I have been steering clear of a refurb, want to know I can take it back to the shop if there are any problems. What about the hp streams? There between 150-200 and have the power point, not sure if they connect to a printer or any good though?

no the refurb do have a warranty from pc world, and they did replace it when it had a dodgy screen. The hp does crawl towards the pricey line, and i recommend a usb cable printer as wireless will be very costly. Simply keep the printer in a cupboard, and plug it in via USB. however, t can get quite large if it is a coloured printer you want...and pricey. you also wnat to be sure, you can access the re-fill cartridges easily. A HP printer i would reccomend.
Good Luck

Thank you very much
Currently I know of two good deals at the £300 mark -

This one -

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/lenovo-ideapad-510-15-6-laptop-black-10146128-pdt.html

You get more storage but it's not an SSD. Ram and HDD can be accessed.

Or

http://www.ebuyer.com/765016-hp-250-g5-i3-laptop-x0q79es-x0q79es-abu

Generation behind but could be a fairly solid machine.

Maybe someone else has an opinion on them as well. I'm still looking myself for around this price point.

Quick note - if she's going to carry it to and from school they are full sized 2.2kg+ laptops. A little large for an 11 year old.
Main problem with the streams and lots of the lower end laptops is the limited storage (32GB would run out quickly for me) so it depends how much you expect her to use it. There are ways around limited storage (external drives, cloud storage etc.). If it were me I'd aim for an alternative with a more storage, the ASUS X553SA for example looks good in theory, no idea about in practice.

Will she be just carrying it round the house or taking it to school? You are probably limited to a 15.6" size anyway and they can be quite weight if carrying round all the time.

I think you are aiming for bog standard i3 or i5 processor (you might snaffle an I5 on Black Friday..

500gb-1tb HDD or a 128GB SDD the latter is faster at loading than the former but stores much less.

15.6" screen -14". Some of them may have HD which means better resolution and more detailed pictures. Think TV and the difference between 720p and HD.

Weight and batter life will normally pay a premium for, but if its not leaving the house then it wont matter much.

Examples.
