Unistudent gives good advice. Don't expect immediate results though, and perhaps ease it in. I was going to the gym twice a week before Christmas for 3 months but I've now upped it to 4 times a week because my body can take it.

To the other discussion in this thread re abs:
That's personal preference. In my opinion, i prefer a girl a bit chunkier than ab level but that's simply preference. The Youtube video i linked to is what i consider a very good, strong healthy body. Not emaciated.
At the end of the day women have a much higher bf% than men so aiming for visible abs is perhaps heading towards unhealthy territory but i see no reason why you can't aim for 'some' abs
