Smoking

How come you can smoke at 16 and not buy it? But it's still illegal for someone over the age of 18 to buy it for you, it's like they're asking you to commit a crime.

The control for smoking is based on purchase age without making the activity itself illegal

16 year olds are allowed to smoke because for some people, it might end up becoming a necessity for them depending on their life. For example, if they've been addicted since like 10 due to terrible family or home life, then not being able to smoke might end up putting their mental health in danger. It's why it's a better idea for the government to limit the acquisition of the product and not its use, or else you'll end up with forced mental health consequences from that young person, which may turn out very badly given that their brain is still developing. Stopping the purchase of these products will make it harder for the person to even begin smoking in the first place, so there's not really an issue.

The law looks to be complicated and unclear to many about what you have stated, but the case against smoking is perfectly clear; if you get addicted to smoking, chances are your health will suffer, and in lots of cases death will come earlier than it should.
It is no longer looked on as being cool to smoke anything, more a case of being simple minded and stupid, so if you never try it you won't get addicted, and problems down the line will be avoided, be healthy keep safe.
