i don't agree with you, learning two languages myself , you would literally not be able to work properly and spend most your time doing it.

Welsh has seen a resurgence in recent years, especially thanks to www.saysomethinginwelsh.com, who have over 10,000 Welsh learners from all over the world. You'd be surprised, but people are now learning Welsh all over the world and are fascinated by this small country's scenery, culture and history.

Since 1993, the Welsh language has enjoyed the same legal status as English in Wales, including bilingual road signs and, since 2000, compulsory second-language teaching alongside English until the age of sixteen (when English can also be dropped).

I still think most English people have a bad attitude towards Welsh, though, but then again English people in general don't bother to learn foreign languages because they are too lazy and mistakenly believe 'everyone else speaks English'. Bah.

I'd find it fascinating, I don't think they are automatically a geek if they know 16 languages, they could be a cool guy.

Basically this guy wakes up at 3am every day, and spends about 16 hours a day reading and writing various languages, just to stay on top of what he knows so his language doesn't deteriorate.
How the hell does he socialise or work? It's both inspiring and very sad to watch. I wouldn't want to go out with someone like that.

Well what do you expect? Being fluent in 16 languages would require a monk-like existence and absolute focus. I doubt these hyper polyglots go out much, but I could be wrong. But if you dated a guy who was a polyglot then you should not complain about his commitment to his languages and therefore a good girlfriend would be understanding and give him the time and space to work on his languages.

People can't be with their partners 24/7 you know.

Though it could get annoying if they were to say 'I can't see you today because I need to work on my language' or 'we can't have sex tonight because I have to be up at 3am to work on my languages' etc.

Lol I know someone who claimed he could speak Arabic and Russian when he was chatting some girl up... she was really interested until she decided to test out his Russian (turned out her father was Russian, and that she actually was fluent...)

Did I say I expected any less from a polyglot? I'm quite aware of the amount of work that goes into maintaining 16 languages.

I was just saying why I, personally, wouldn't want to be in a relationship with one.

OMG...is that even possible?! I find it hard to learn a 2nd language let alone speak 16!! God the person would have to be an utter genius and I'd totally applaud them! No I wouldn't think they were a geek, I'd be utterly impressed and I would think it an attractive facet!

Also, I find it difficult to believe that someone could accomplish fluency in 16 languages.

Edit: I guess it also depends on which languages you're learning. If they're ones totally unrelated then I'd consider that a huge achievement, if it's like "Italian, Castellano, Catalan, German, Dutch, Russian, Czech etc..." then a lot of them are quite interrelated. It's still a mega achievement, but not as much necessarily as if you learned "English, French, Spanish, Welsh, Chinese, Japanese, German, Russian..." if you get my drift.
