Boyfriend's family don't know about his ex

I mentioned something about my boyfriend's ex to his parents... as they were talking about his friends (they all used to hang out together). They were shocked, and started asking me how long they were together etc.
They didn't know about her at all despite them being together for 2 years, whereas my boyfriend told them about me straight away.

Is this odd??

she was not the sort of person to meet his parents, I don't know what she was lacking but he felt she would not be good enough
