I received results for my gcses 2023 and i wanted to ask if they are good enough to get into Birmingham medical school because i know that they do shortlist using gcse results.
Hey there, thanks for posting a question in the Medicine forum.

Brum score both Eng Lit and Eng Lang, so unless you have a lot of contextual points, even a top decile UCAT is not going to be enough to get you shortlisted, I;m afraid

i have submitted my english lang paper for remarking as it was only one mark off an 8. if my grade changes would that by any chance make a difference?
oh ok thanks. what other unis would you recommend looking at my gcses because i know they are lower than the average person applying to medicine?
Actually, just remembered Birmingham do not accept GCSE resits, anyway. But your GCSEs are fine and there are lots of med schools open to you, but it depends on your A level predictions and UCAT score, so impossible to say without those Have a look at the link in the first post here, which is in the standard response given to your first post https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7233558

Thank you so much! Do you think oxbridge is out of question? Because i know cambridge especially, don’t weigh gcses as much as oxford. if i did really well in a levels, ucat and interview would it be possible for me to get in?

Cambridge will interview pretty much anyone they think can realistically attain A*A*A or better, but they use all aspects of an application in making a decision, including GCSEs. However, a very strong admission test result (currently BMAT but this is being replaced) would put you in with a chance. Oxford use GCSEs - number A*s and % A*s - as 50% of their shortlisting and your results would put you at the lower end of those being interviewed, so would depend a bit on the context of your results, ie how your results compared to your peers, I would imagine. Results like this in a poorly performing school may get an interview, but if all your peers did as well, or better, they may not https://www.medsci.ox.ac.uk/study/medicine/pre-clinical/statistics/text-version-of-na-9-8-and-pa-at-gcse-2020 Cambridge would be the better option, given your GCSEs
