SFE maintenance loan and NHS bursary

Hi.

I'm studying dentistry and I will enter 5th year of my studies next academic year, so I should be eligible for NHS bursary to cover my living expenses (let's disregard tuition fees for now).

I read somewhere if I get NHS bursary, I will be eligible only for reduced maintenance loan, which would be non-means tested and it is around 3500 a year. NHS bursary is also about 3500 a year.

Currently I am getting around 11.000 a year in maintenance as I'm a mature student, but with the option of NHS bursary + reduced maintenance loan I will be getting only about 7000 a year, which will make me worse off quite significantly.

Could I just opt-out from the NHS bursary and get my full maintenance loan? I rather pay it back that be short of money next year.

Thank you.

Hi mefooo87,

Unfortunately there is not the option to choose a full SFE maintenance loan in the 5th year of dentistry courses and opt out of the NHS bursary - the only funding available is the NHS bursary and the reduced rate maintenance loan

Thanks,
Calum
