Am I really too old?

Hi

I'm 33 and I've been given a place on an Access to medicine course and I start in September and all my family seem to think I'm too old to become a doctor?

I have always know I was meant to be a doctor it's what I've always wanted to do but life got in the way for a long time until now and I might not be the youngest but I am fit and healthy and I feel I'm more than capable and I've the bonus of not having kids to worry about or a mortgage like many mature students. I know when I do FY1 I'll be close to 40 but I intend to stay active and healthy.

Am I really to old to become a doctor even if I am around 40 when FY training begins ect?

I work in a radiology department ( I'm not a radiographer) and have made friends with a lot of the radiologists on the department and they don't think I'm too old especially since it's not as demanding as other specialists physically ( still hard work but not as demanding) and one of the consultants let me shadow them on one of my days off and I loved it.

Am I too old?

Absolutely not. You've done fantastically well to get a place at medical school and I think you should go for it, regardless of what others may say or think. Age is just a number.

I think 33 is not old. If you have a real passion for it, why not?
Ignore the family and get on with your own life.
