The Student Room Group

Would I be approved for CPR?

I’m a university student, about to begin Year 1 of my degree course.

The issue is, I undertook a foundation year during the 2021/2022 academic year and failed due to crippling depression, anxiety, undiagnosed (at the time) ADHD and not receiving support for my dyspraxia.

I then repeated this foundation year for the 2022/2023 academic year and passed, and I was diagnosed with ADHD over the summer.

I am meant to begin year 1 of my degree course now but I was told I would not receive a tuition fee loan for this academic year due to having used up my gift year to repeat the foundation year.

I am now in the process of applying for an extra gift year due to personal reasons and I am wondering if my circumstances would be sufficient for this application to be approved?

I’m aware that students that have dropped out or were not able to complete a prior year are given that extra year, but what about a student that has passed the year they used their gift year for?

Would I be approved for extra tuition support under CPR?
I doubt SFE will tell you one way or another before you submit the CPR application.

Anecdotally based on my experience I think it's certainly possible, as I had a year of funding approved via CPR for similar reasons (minus the ADHD and dyspraxia even). The key to a successful CPR application I think is to get as much evidence as possible - letter from your GP, reports from any specialists you've seen, letters from any counselors/therapists you've been seen by, etc, and write a "covering letter" explaining the situation in full and how it affected your studies at the time.

Hi there,

Do you know what kind of evidence you're going to send to us? For example, do you have a letter form a professional person (like a doctor or tutor) explaining what happened?

Thanks, Graeme

Hi Graeme, I am going to submit my ADHD diagnosis, my dyspraxia diagnosis, letters documenting the therapy sessions I have had over the last year, a supporting statement from student advice at my university and a letter from myself.

Would all of this suffice?

Best wishes,

Zach.

Hi zkayse,

For the evidence to be accepted, it is best you provide a letter from your GP or university, that specifically confirms what happened, when this happened and how this directly impacted your studies.
